The Story:
Crawling out of the Muck
With the Skystrider now sinking into a bog cradled in the underVeiled island slopes, our heroes scrabble to gather what they can, pulling supplies for a camp to the only peak that reaches above the shrouded world below. A small camp is made, where the chef for the ship cooks snacks suggested by Cassie and Cier (s'morres). While the captain pours over his star charts in search of a solution, two of the three skiffs sent out to scout the reef return. Upon one is the newest arrival to their ranks, the infamous mercenary, Alonso (Jeremy's character).
Blacktips, now scouting the shadows below, comes upon a strange discovery. A single black chain of cast iron, dangling like a bridge between the rock foundation of their own island, and another peak, underVeiled, nearby. As he begins to search it becomes apparent this is not the only chain. The whole of the archipelago is tethered by various sized chains, all of cold iron, wet with moss and warm moisture.
Upon his return, the Captain is distraut to learn that the four fierce warriors that saved his crew (but not his ship) have decided to follow the chains to their nexus, and see what it might reveal. Alonso, out of good heart and no expectation of reward, agrees to go with them, much to the captain (and Blacktips) relief.
favorite moments
- Cassie, whispering (but so the captain can hear) as she walks away, "Is he still a captain if he doesn't have a ship?"
- Cira, as serious as could be, suggesting they would be okay, because, her sister and her have a lot of sleep-over experience.
The Veiled Ruins
As the five approach the center of the network of chains, they find a massive island so covered in the ruins of an ancient temple it's hard to tell if there is ground underneath, or if the tower itself is built from nothing but the Veil. Pieces of it's crumbling facade float like disengaged debris, hovering in place from some ancient magic. The chains are everywhere, and the world is lit by pale ghostly flames from arcane stone brazers. The Lathdark are everywhere, but their approach goes unnoticed. Cier points out an entrance amid the lower archs of the ruins, as Spookytail shifts the shadows to study the exterior.
All five in tow manage to escape a wave of Lathdark on patrol by escaping into the iron doors, closing the barred gate behind them, cutting off the wave's entrance. As they sneak into the ruins they pass an immense chamber, filled with spell sleeping Lathdark, their armor off, their bloodlust slaked. Another chamber as large as he island itself reveals two things: the Ruins are bigger on the inside than the out, and the center of it's peak is a hollowed place with a colossal Black Jade Statue to some forgotten dark god.
Ascending through the keep they come to a sudden change in the decor. Countless treasures of trade ships paint the walls, floor, and ceiling. Whoever had been pirating in these waters has collected the treasure here, for their own greed. They are taking in the luxury of this living space when a small Lathdark Butler arrives, panics, and fails to get away. With little effort the heroes are able to convince it to take them to the keeper of this Ruins, who the butler says is called Aisnemid.
